Hurt seldom tuned to concert pitch, so some of his keys may be difficult
to identify for that reason. I am sure his FRANKIE is played in DGDGBD,
and PAYDAY seems to be in a open D, DADF#AD. TALKING CASEY JONES, given
the knife technique, is also in one of these open tunings as well.
Another player recommended open E, but I get nervous about my old guitars
and extra-light strings, so I never retune anything ABOVE concert pitch.
You can play the same fingering in the open D as you would in an open E,
with less stress on the instrument. Good luck, and keep working on those
great Hurt tunes!

I believe he uses mostly standard tuning. There are a few things in
Open G(DGDGBD), like Frankie and Albert, and I believe Sliding
Delta is played in open D. I learned Frankie and Albert from the
Rory Block tapes that Homespun sells. She teaches it is open G, and
probably saw John Hurt play it that way. You can get these
tapes from Homespun(800-33-tapes). I have also seen(in a catalog) a 6 tape
set on the Guitar of Mississippi John Hurt by Stefan Grossman. I think
that there are tapes devoted to the different tunings and to blues in
different keys. You can get the catalog from:

I saw John Hurt at one of his first shows up North. The club was called
The Ontario Place, I think, in the D.C. area. I asked him to play Frankie.
He agreed, said it was in open G but couldn't or didn't want to try to
retune his guitar, so asked me to tune mine for him. I did, and his
playing of the tune was all I could wish for.

Another interesting anecdote that evening was when we were sitting around
a table in-between sets, John very gingerly asked me if I thought the
management would mind if he took a sugar cube from the bowl for his
coffee. He told me he'd been on the plantation all his life except for the
one time they brought him to New York in the Twenties to make his early
recordings. His rediscovery brought him into a whole different world, and
his shy, quiet ways were as refreshing to us as our city ways were a
challenge to him.

If You Don't Want Me... you got to have me anyhow (or something like) that is
in DADF#AD as is Payday and I think...Talking Casey. As everyone else
has added Frankie is in DGDGBD. I think the rest are in some form of
standard tuning.

My $0.02 worth
Get your hands on Stefan Grossman's book on MJH it's worth it.
